2024 Virginia States Championship Wrap Up

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this weekend’s tournament such an amazing success! From the players to the sponsors and volunteers, your support and dedication made all the difference.

We kicked things off with a fantastic clinic, where 11 participants were coached by the amazing Sebastian Franco and Mario Mercado, with world-famous photographer Ken Fife capturing some incredible shots. Special thanks to Formula Flow for demoing their top-tier equipment, and to Head Penn for providing the balls that set the standard for the tournament. Worldgate Athletic Club & Spa was a perfect venue, and we’re grateful to Splathead for the incredible quarter-zips that will help us remember this tournament for years to come. If you missed out on a quarter-zip, you can still get one for $25—just email president@cvra.org to order!

A special shoutout goes to our amazing sponsors: Jose Marinay, Tracey Portillo, Marc Highfill, Ariel Garcia, Mark Baron, Maddie Melendez, Karen Grisz, and the Torres family—Jaime, Christine, and Jayden. Your generosity helped make this event possible, and we truly appreciate your support.

Congrats to our raffle winners: Jim Ochoa and Renzo! And special thanks to Rex Dietz for making sure the location setup was seamless, Nick Williams for logistics support, and all of our amazing helpers: Bill Milbach (for stringing and helping run the tournament desk), Maddie (for organizing the clinic, raffle baskets, and helping with reffing), Karen (for stepping in to help run the tournament), and all the players who helped ref and stayed patient when the schedule got tight.

A personal thank you to Christine Torres for supporting me throughout the planning process and for doing an incredible job with the tournament logos (her first time!). And a huge thanks to my son Jayden Torres, who helped with reffing and the tournament desk. His handwriting was much clearer than mine—thankfully!

You can find the full tournament results on R2. And for those who couldn’t make it, we live-streamed several matches on YouTube. You can catch all the action on this YouTube playlist.

Thank you again to everyone who participated and supported this event. The turnout far exceeded our expectations, and we couldn’t have done it without your energy and dedication. Looking forward to seeing you all on the courts again soon!
